International Day of People with Disability

Happy International Day of People with Disability!

Today we celebrate the people in our Brighton Rec community who live with disability.  Our longstanding association with Bayley House has assisted us in providing volunteers such as Penny and Simon with the opportunity to work at the Rec.

Penny Johnson joined us as an Occasional Care team member in 1984.

“I love it (working at the Rec),” Penny says, “ It’s good to meet different people.”

Ray Fairley is Transport and Logistics Manager at Bayley House, supporting those living with disability live a full and engaged life. Ray has supported Penny since she began in the early 80s.

“When the opportunity came up for her to work here, everyone supported her. For Penny (this job) is good for her self-esteem and is fulfilling a passion for a job that she really loves”, says Ray.

At Brighton Rec, we welcome people from all abilities, and our programs reflect this. Our all abilities pottery class started this term and we are looking to re-introduce our all abilities gymnastics back in 2021.

We all also welcome our BAM All Stars to the Centre each week. Run by BAM Arts Inc. these high energy dance classes feature contemporary pop music, adaptable choreography and are open to all ages and all abilities – just bring your enthusiasm!

Brighton Rec Centre – there’s something for everyone!
